New stuff is on the way.

Sorry I haven't posted for a while. A new video updating the garden status should be up in the next couple days.

Note on Construction

I forgot to mention that I drilled a bunch of 1/2-inch holes in the bottom of the Garden on Wheel for drainage and covered the bottom with landscaping cloth.

We'll see how it works.

Why I'm Here

I've started this blog to show people the garden on wheels I built in hopes that it will inspire other people to try a similar experiment. I also hope people will share there ideas on how to improve on the concept and on gardening in general.
Shortly I will post some photos or a movie showing the garden on wheels (GOW) so everyone can see what I did.
The GOW is motivated by my desire to introduce my young son to as many outdoor, productive, creative activities as possible. Digging in the dirt helps develop his immune system and seeing plants go from seed to plate is a rich educational experience.

But what's this about a garden on wheels, you ask?
Well my family and I live on the third floor of a condo complex in Chicago. Our deck is too small to support anything but some window boxes (on the deck railing) and a couple potted plants. However there is a common area behind the building. There is space for a modest garden but it has two obstacles. It's paved and it's a common space.
My vision was to have a plantable area of about 5-feet by 3-1/2-feet. Something that big would get in the way of hosting parties and children playing. So I built a wooden planting bed in the dimensions I specified and I mounted it on industrial-strength casters so that people could just roll it out of the way when they need the area.
In a week or so my son and I will start planting. I have seeds for a couple kinds of lettuce, snap peas, rosemary, chamomile, basil and special round carrots that are supposed to work in planters (Tonda di Parigi).

Stay tuned for pictures and/or video and share your opinions and stories.
